New Rule: Sex Monster | Real Time with Bill Maher
Why should one person's victimhood trump everyone else's?
In his editorial New Rule, Bill Maher questions the timing of sexual assault allegations against Joe Biden and argues that, while serious, they could end up doing more harm than good.
As usual, I find this segment of his show thought provoking.
The statement, “Why should one person's victimhood trump everyone else's?” is illuminating. It shines a light on so much that is going on at the moment.
I read an Op-Ed in the New York Times titled, I Believe Tara Reade. I’m Voting for Joe Biden Anyway.
In the piece, the feminist author, Linda Hirshman said,
Discounting Ms. Reade’s accusation and, one after another, denigrating her corroborating witnesses, calling for endless new evidence, avowing that you “hear” her, is nonsense. We are now up to four corroborating witnesses — including one contemporary corroborating witness, unearthed by Rich McHugh, who was Ronan Farrow’s producer at NBC News during the Harvey Weinstein #MeToo reporting — and one “Larry King Live” tape.
She goes on to say,
I’ll take one for the team. I believe Ms. Reade, and I’ll vote for Mr. Biden this fall.
Now Hirshman is living by the following mantra: "Suck it up and make the utilitarian bargain."
All major Democratic Party figures have indicated they're not budging on the presumptive nominee, and the transaction costs of replacing him would be suicidal. Barring some miracle, it's going to be Mr. Biden.
So what is the greatest good or the greatest harm? Mr. Biden, and the Democrats he may carry with him into government, are likely to do more good for women and the nation than his competition, the worst president in the history of the Republic. Compared with the good Mr. Biden can do, the cost of dismissing Tara Reade — and, worse, weakening the voices of future survivors — is worth it. And don't call me an amoral realist. Utilitarianism is not a moral abdication; it is a moral stance.
Hirshman asks, "Won't the good for all the Americans who will benefit from replacing Donald Trump with Joe Biden, including the masses of women who will get some crumbs, count for more than the harm done to the victims of abuse?"
It appears as if she is admitting that to do more harm than good, Tara Reade must be sacrificed. Bill Maher said the same thing.
I’m glad people like Linda Hirshman and Bill Maher are coming out and being totally honest. This isn’t about “survivors” or believing women. Maybe it never was after all. The political left feels that people are to be thrown under the bus when it’s convenient. It appears as if progressives are now all about winning elections and not about doing the right thing and supporting accusers.
Winning. Isn’t that what politics is about anyway?
The #metoo movement is officially dead. Hypocrisy killed it.
